seriously?! :::cries:: Calling my beloved social media OTs....last chance

C'mon, y'all, SOME of you SURELY have answers to at least one or more of these questions!! I -and the world - want to hear!! It may end up in an article and even if it doesn't it's some good food for thought :) I need answers before Thursday morning!!  I'm about to answer them myself. :)

Questions for Social Media article

How do you use social media in your practice of OT?

Do you think social media is a good thing for the profession? Why or why not?

What benefits has social media had for you as an OT? If you can provide an example of how social media has helped you, please do!

What drawbacks has it had? If you can provide an example here, please do!

For someone just getting started using social media as part of their career as an OT, what advice would you give them?

See, I use social media, but I have no idea how it helps the profession. I have gotten some good ideas for therapy activities, but through the internet and other websites rather than through social media. I am just not sure how to answer those questions. my site is www.therapyfunzone.com.

Since you haven't had much of a response I thought I'd share with you a little bit. I'm an OTD student with a graduation date of May 2011, so I'm not really in practice yet but... I do use social medias for OT purposes.

I've been following your blog for almost 2 years. I love reading your experiences in school as it has given me some ideas what other schools are doing in the state of TN. I also follow many OTs, OTAS, and professional organizations on Facebook. This is a great opportunity to allow me to see when there are upcoming meetings, current issues regarding laws or ideas to promote advocacy and lastly for support of other OTs.

Yes and no. As I said it's great for supporting current students, staying current on issues and networking. However, in ways it can be damaging to the field or even personally as our electronic "walls" come down and we become no longer speak without thinking but type without thinking, which can never be undone.

I have used your blog as well as a few others to assist me with difficult patients, treatment ideas, general support and of coarse keeping me active in organization.

What drawbacks has it had? If you can provide an example here, please do!
I've become more aware that my words even on a private blog could impact my career goals. So perhaps the drawback is I must censor myself more than I would have before I started graduate school for OT.

Read all you can about OT, about different people’s experiences, network, make friends and always remember you are a representation of the field of occupational therapy.

Hello!
I'm so glad you posted the reminder! Between assignments, the holidays and the fast approaching final exams, I forgot that I wanted to respond to this!
Please feel free to use any of my previous correspondence if you still have it. If not, the nuts & bolts of it all is along these lines. I am currently back in school as a 40-something pursing my MOT thanks largely in part to your blog (and a couple of other OT blogs). I felt that OT was truly represented in these forums, far & above the Bureau of Labor Statistics job descriptions. Thanks to these blogs, I was able to apply to programs KNOWING I had found my life calling. IMHO, that is rather an amazing impact!
Sorry it's so short & sweet, I'm feverish, I have a kiddo in the tub calling for assistance with her hair washing & an intervention to write before I pass out tonight!

Hi,

Know this is probably far too late so sorry but thought it might be worth posting just in case:

How do you use social media in your practice of OT?

It's mainly a way of building links with other OT's and professionals who work in similar fields or who can help each other out. It's also been a great way of sharing information and getting questions answered - really helpful when trying to write a report and need some help fast from other OT's! It's also a great way of keeping up to date with information from our British Assoc of OT's.

Do you think social media is a good thing for the profession? Why or why not?

Yes definitely - really helps us build a portfolio of different working techniques and methods and bat ideas back and forth. It can also provide informal supervision but you do obviously need to be very careful and sure of the advise you take!

What benefits has social media had for you as an OT? If you can provide an example of how social media has helped you, please do!

It can be a good way of promoting the profession and your business - letting people know what you do, what your interested in and what you think about certain topics.

What drawbacks has it had? If you can provide an example here, please do!

It's easy to leave a comment or re-post a blog or link and people mis-read what your trying to say.
